Freestyle is the form of wrestling most practiced throughout the world and included in the Olympic games. In Freestyle, wrestlers mainly grapple from their feet with points being awarded for takedowns as well as any exposure of your opponent's back to the mat. Virginia holds a Freestyle State Championship for youth in early May. Wrestlers who place at the State tournament will be invited to the national youth tournament held annually in Fargo, North Dakota. The "Fargo Freestyle Nationals" is the premier youth wrestling event in the United States.
The Force will be practicing twice a week - Tuesday and Thursday - from 6:15 to 7:45 at the wrestling room at Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School in preparation for the youth state championships. The freestyle club will be attending approximately two to three tournaments prior to the youth state championships. The date, time and locations of the tournaments will be announced by the first practice on March 14th. The fee for all weekly instruction from March through May is $185. Parents will be responsible for providing wrestling shoes, headgear and a freestyle singlet for their wrestler as well as covering any admission fee to the tournaments (usually around $10). Registration capped at 20 wrestlers.
